Frickin diaper rash

I feel like diaper rash has been a constant battle! We're FTP and figured it would be pretty simple, you change their diaper, they're good to go! Ellie gets diaper rash probably once a week, and Everett just got it so bad it's bleeding.  We do powder after their baths, but not at every diaper change.  Am I supposed to dry their butts after wiping them when changing them?  We seriously change their diapers every hour or 2 - we just check it and if the line is blue we change it.  What on earth am I doing wrong here?

Sometimes it just happens.  DD1 hardly ever got it, so it's a new world with DD2.  I felt so terrible the other day because I realized she's had a rash that just wouldn't get better until I cut out citrus.  Didn't realize this until I ate a ton of fresh pineapple - her poor little butt was fine one diaper change and was so red and sore the next :-(  Had a couple open sores too!  I felt so bad, stupid pineapple.  Fortunately it got better quickly.

I do dry her off and try and make sure she's extra dry every time I close her diaper back up, just to help with her skin.  I've also let her lay on a towel without a diaper about 20 minutes a day to let her air out :-)  She seems to like it!  Made her sister (22 months) panic when she pooped on the towel yesterday!

If you can do some naked time like PP said, it can really help. Also try to let their skin dry before you apply diaper cream and close the diaper. If the rash is bad our babies doc recommended using a blow drier on the 'cool' setting to get them really dry!

We thankfully haven't had this issue, but a friend just posted on FB asking for suggestions for bad diaper rash. A few people posted about changing the type of diapers/wipes you use because it could be a reaction or sensitivity to something. Someone else said a little breast milk works (is there anything it can't fix?). Just a few more suggestions to try out! I hope they get better soon!

You may want to put aquaphor (sp) on them to protect their little bums. Some babies need to be watched very carefully for poop. My little ones would get a rash if they spent more then a few mins in a poopy diaper. I would literally have to change Alexis as soon as she was done or her butt would be beet red.

Bethany gets diaper rash so easily! She is so sensative! The perfumed wipes from pampers gave her a rash.

I use coconut oil to clear up the rash.. desitin just makes it worse. I also dry her bottom with a cloth after EVERY diaper change. It has made a huge difference just drying her each time. I also try to pat with the baby wipe instead of wiping. Or I try to be very gentle in wiping. It has helped limit irritating her bottom.

I was skeptical about the coconut oil.  But it cleared up her bad rash in just 2 days. A lot of ladies I know suggested it. You actually find it next to the cooking oil at the grocery. It says right on the jar I got that it is a good for skin and lips.

    Hope this helps!

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in when it comes to clearing up the rash.

I just started using Triple Paste on A's rash. Literally within 1 change it was already 50% better and cleared up within 24 hours.

I don't know how it will do for prevention, but for clearing up it has been amazing so far. Much better than the Butt Paste I was using previously.

Thanks everyone.  Do you know if the coconut oil can be used if the skin is broken?

E had a bad diaper rash a few weeks ago. We ditched the wipes and just used a wet cloth, dried her bum before applying diaper rash cream and then slathered it on and changed her diaper as soon as she popped, sometimes we changed it 4 times within a hour (ya she poops A LOT).
Diaper free time is also a great idea. Good luck!

Yes..it will actually soothe the discomfort from the rash. I Googled it and found lots of supporting information on coconut oil.  I highly recommend it.

I use a little washcloth to be sure her bum is dry before applying diaper rash cream. I don't put the cream on every change but usually a lot at night and anytime she poops.

Is the rash all-over red, or splotchy and scabby? I was told that all-over red is regular diaper rash, while splotches and scabs are yeast - for which you'd want Canesten. You can do the plain old drugstore Canesten cream, but apparently there's also a children's Canesten (milder) to use for diaper rashes...but would need to see a doc for a prescription. Good luck! I've also used Ihle's Paste mixed with a little cortisone cream and Vaseline...just blend together, and put it on as thick as spackle, lol...

LO's ped prescribed him nystatin for a yeast rash-- it was a splotchy rash that wouldn't clear up. If it recurs, maybe it could be yeast?

I agree with pp that changing brands might help. Pampers broke my oldest son out-- he could only wear Luvs. I also agree to make sure that your LO is completely dry before applying cream-- it can trap moisture. There are essentially two kinds of creams, one treats and one prevents. The one with zinc oxide (I think that's it?) is the one to clear up an existing rash... The petroleum jelly based creams are barriers to use after each change. Triple paste works great but for a recurring rash I'd definitely look into other causes.

Maddie had a nasty bright red rash, starting to open up. Three days using lotramin (sp), the athlete foot cream, it was completely gone. It may be a fungal rash and that worked wonders for us. Good luck!! :)

Dd used to get them bad. We would completely dry her butt with a hair dryer after each change and apply Vaseline everytime. It's the only thing that worked.

DS1 gets rashes from Huggies Shea butter wipes and one of the scented Pampers wipes. But he is fine with Pampers Natural wipes

DS2 hasn't had a rash yet but we do give him time to dry before closing his diaper most of the time (not always MOTN)
