Each April our town has a spring clean up where you can put almost anything (no appliances, computers, tv's, chemicals, yard waste) on the curb and they will take it away for only the price of 6 garbage stickers. It's wonderful, especially after moving and realizing we don't need so much junk!
And the best part is the scavengers! People go around and scavenge piles looking for "treasures". I must admit, I have found a few really great things but I don't go out and actively look. Just if I'm driving by and I see something good. We had people last night as late as 11pm with flashlights searching our pile!
One man's trash is another man's treasure!

Our city does this too, neighborhood by neighborhood throughout the year. When it's our turn, it's amazing who shows up to scavenge. It's big money, especially for people looking to recycle metals.
