Charlotte's Birth

Where to begin...where to begin...

I guess it starts with waking up yesterday morning (4/19) at around 7am...I woke up before DH which is unusual since he typically gets up between 5-6 and does some housework or does some work for his job.  We laid in bed and watched a little tv and chatted until DS woke up around 8:30.  I brought DS into our room to snuggle in bed with us.  I casually thought to myself that I hadn't felt baby move yet, but at the same time I was being lazy so I thought maybe she was being a little lazy.  Most mornings she isn't moving around much until I'm up and about and have eaten/drank something.  A little before 9 I got in the shower and then I went downstairs to lay on the couch and try to get her to wake up.  I drank ice water which normally wakes her up - no go on that front.  Ate a bowl of cereal and that did no good, either.  I felt maybe two tiny movements during the 30-40 minutes I was trying to get her to wake up.

Finally called the on call doc and once she called me back she told me to come on in and we'd put baby on the monitor.  I had an NST a few weeks ago so I figured we go in, spend 45ish minutes there on the monitor and go home.  We almost brought DS with us thinking we could occupy him during that time but then called MIL who was on her way home and said she would watch him.

We got to the hospital at 10:40 am - they hooked me up to the monitors and her heart rate was in the 200's...I was initially concerned about that because that's quite elevated and her normal was 140's-150's.  I asked about that and the nurse started asking if I had been sick recently or been around anyone who has been sick. They said the high heart rate could be from being sick, which I'm not.  They didn't tell me immediately, but baby was nonreactive and they were being pretty emergent about things.  I knew something was up when a second nurse came in and started getting IV supplies and fluids to hang on me.  My heart rate was elevated and they figured it was stress from everything and they weren't sure if the monitor was picking up my heart rate and doubling it or if that was truly baby's heart rate.

They got me into a gown and let me use the bathroom despite one of the nurses not wanting me off the monitor.  I then had one nurse putting in my IV and drawing blood while another nurse was getting the ultrasound machine to scan the baby to see if it was really her heart rate that was so elevated.  A third and then fourth nurse was in my room by that time.  I was watching the ultrasound and it seemed like forever before they found her heart rate - I was so scared they weren't going to find it.  They did find it and it was in the 200's.

The on call doctor got there by that time and she told me that we needed to do an emergency csection.  She had already called my doctor and he was also on his way in.  The anesthesiologist was also in my room to discuss things with me.  DH was calling my parents and his parents to let them know what was going on.  (Which, btw, the night prior he had a dream and told me about it Saturday morning that I had to have an emergency csection and that he missed the birth - he told me this before we ever got out of bed that morning.)  My doctor showed up pretty quickly and they were wheeling me to the OR and getting everything set up.  It was like a whirl wind.  I've been on the opposite side of emergency csections as the NICU nurse but it was odd to be the actual patient and to know that this was a true emergency and that myself and my baby were the ones in trouble.

From the time we got to the hospital - 10:40am to baby being out was less than an hour - she was born at 11:36am.  I at one point asked if the csection had started and they told me yes and that baby would be out in just a minute.  I started to freak out because DH wasn't in there with me yet and they finally went to get him.  Baby was pulled out right before he made it into the OR (thus the part of the dream where he missed the delivery).

Come to find out, there was a lot of blood in the amniotic fluid so they think I was just starting to abrupt.  She also had the cord wrapped around her ankle.  My doctor said that if I had waited another hour or two to come in that she probably would have died.  Also told me that now I have my choice in the future if I want to VBAC or have a csection.  It hasn't completely sunk in yet how close we were to losing her.  We are very blessed that she and I are both healthy.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Good job trusting your instinct on that. I don't think I would have ever thought to call a doctor due to a decrease in movement. Congratulations! Charlotte is a beautiful name

    It's a BOY

  • So glad that both you and the baby are fine. I don't mess with dreams. My dad had a dream once when I was a baby that on the way home from my grandma's house we got in a bad car accident. He didn't tell my mother. Luckily my uncle put my car seat on the side instead of the middle. When the car rolled the roof caved in the middle where I would have been buckled in. Luckily we were all okay. Dad got in trouble for not telling anyone about his dream. Some dreams are pretty legit.
