Mastitis again??? Weird symptoms.

OK so I am almost certain I had mastitis a couple of weeks ago- pump wasn't working well, got painful lumps, then chills, flu-like body ache, and sore throat but no other symptoms. Since I caught it early I treated it at home with suggestions from kellymom (pumping, massaging, heat, etc.) and a few other places plus natural antibiotic food/drinks and it went away. I never called my midwife since this happened Fri after the office was closed and I felt OK on Monday.

I feel exactly like I did then but with no real pain in the breasts. I am still weaning so I get engorged sometimes, but I have no lumps in my breasts. I do have a painful lump in my right armpit that I discounted as an ingrown hair. Upon further inspection, there is nothing visible at the surface and isn't even red.

My body never runs a fever so that's no help to me. I would think it could be a cold or allergies, but I have no symptoms other than extreme throat swelling and ache, body ache, fatigue, and chill. It's painful to turn my head between my throat and aches and I feel kind of fuzzy headed. I've had no new food or drink I could be reacting to. Sleep is about the same/better than it has been the past few weeks.

I fully intend to call my midwife's office in the morning but wanted to get some perspective in the meantime. Anyone felt any of this? It all came on so suddenly and intensely like last time. I'll probably XP this to the breastfeeding board as well.

I plan to get a long, hot shower just in case there is something clogged in my breasts or armpits. Suggestions are welcome!

Re: Mastitis again??? Weird symptoms.

  • I'm not much help in this but 1. I get a lump in my armpit before it gets to the rest of my boob. This happens on my left side where I always had a fat pocket. I haven't had mastitis before but before my left boob becomes engouraged, it sometimes starts there (like the lymph nodes swell.) 2. Hope you feel better and your midwife has some ideas/suggestions or you get antibiotics that help quickly. Feel better!!

  • I've never had mastitis but I think I've gotten close. Painful breasts were the first symptom for me with clogged ducts followed by all of the other ones. (Feverish, chills, disorientation, general malaise, etc.) I would say that without the pain in your breasts, you may just be sick. :(

I massage every time I shower now out of habit though since I was getting plugged ducts so often so I say that can't hurt the whole time you're weaning, anyway.

  • I went to urgent care yesterday- ended up fighting a temp of 102/103 the past 48 hours even with ibuprofen in my system. He said it's some sort of bacterial infection- could be some hanging on from the mastitis, some in my throat (like a form of strep) or a combination, but either way the treatment is high and long dose antibiotics. Also said that the lump seemed like a swollen gland but he wasn't concerned since it was getting smaller. I already feel way better today and the fever is under control.
