HSG?

My name is Brandy and I am new to this forum.  I have tried a couple of different forums but I think my issues best fit the Secondary IF forum.  My DH and I have been ttc for almost two years now.  The DH has been tested and is perfectly fine.  My OBGYN is not quite sure what to do with me as I ovulate regularly and have 28 day cycles.  He wants me to have a HSG test done and then from there he is in contact with a RE and they are talking like they are going to be very aggressive with my treatment.  I just wondered what to expect with the HSG test and what kind of things to expect with an aggressive treatment plan.  Thank you and I am very sorry that any of us have to be on this board.  Who knew the second time around would be so difficult?

Welcome and I guess if I'm being honest those of us who had IF issues the first time probably guessed that those issues would occur the second time around too. ;) sorry just giving you a hard time cause I need some snark in my day.

As far as the hsg goes it's usually not too painful and doesn't really take that long, I know some have had less than fabulous experiences, but I think most are fine. I had mild discomfort during the procedure and cramping afterwards and so I would plan to go home and relax afterwards if possible. As far as aggressive treatment that could mean almost anything based upon your specific situation. So my advice would be read up about IUI's and maybe even IF (although usually other things are tried first) and medications like clomid and fish type drugs so you can develop your own opinions, in this process the best thing you can do is be your own advocate and know as much about your options, side effects and possible outcomes. Good luck!!

TTC#1 May 2009- July 2010 on our own with no luck

Started with RE in August 2010, dx with unexplained IF and then finally our 3rd IUI cycle using Follistim and Trigger resulted in our wonderful little man.  Born 12/2/11

TTC#2 Never really prevented, but were careful early on as Dr. reccomended

Surprise BFP 12/16/13, started progesterone immediately as first numbers came back low, but betas were good.  Progesterone wasnt enough. Natural MC 12/24/13.

Back with RE as of January 2014...

    5/27/14- Chemical Pregnancy :(

    April 2015 IVF#1

    5/13/15- BFP, please stick LO!

I totally second what @designer303‌ said about being your own advocate and totally educating yourself. Doctors are wonderful but a lot of times they want to go by the book, and not consider as much about your specific situation. You need to know what's going to work for you. That includes financially and emotionally in addition to medically.

As far as the HSG goes, mine was really bad. It didn't last very long, it was more painful than being in labor! But the pain stopped as soon as it was over. I would recommend taking Tylenol before you go, or even ask your doctor if you can give you something a little stronger to take before you go in. It's totally worth it to do, giving you answers is really important.

Good luck and hope you get more answers and know where to direct your research.

I'm sort of in your boat, needing to do an HSG too. my RE said to take tylenol ahead of time too. i imagine it can't feel good passing a catheter through your cervix. i never went into labor with DS so my cervix has only dilated when i had to take cytotec and fuck, that shit hurt. i am terrified it will feel like that. great, now i've probably scared you too. sorry.

I can never remember the which one is the HSG, uterus or tubes? I know the other is SHG. Either way the one ine uterus was no biggie, and I just had some leakage from the water.  The tube one was just a little crampy during, and then for a couple hours after.  Crampy but it wasn't awful for me.  No one ever has the same outcome.  Good luck!

The HSG was the worst test for me in terms of serious cramping, but thankfully it only lasts about 2mins, so even if it's painful, it's nothing you won't be able to tolerate.  Depending on whether or not your tubes are open, you can expect much more testing. Mostly b/w.

    Good luck.

My HSG was easy. The worst part was getting the catheter in, and it just felt like a little pinch and short, quick cramp. As soon as it was in, I felt nothing.

She struggled to get the catheter in, then it fell out and she had to do it all over again.

My HSG was three years ago and just last week I had an SHG. Same deal expect it was in office, not at the radiology dept at the hospital.
