Need tips on packing fresh fruit

DS is really getting into fingerfoods and will eat pretty much any cut up fruit. I'd like to pack a fruit snack for him to take to daycare every day, but need to send it cut up into pieces because he goes to a small daycare and they don't have time to cut it up themselves. Any ideas on how I can keep it fresh until snack time?

  • I probably should have said I'm trying to avoid lemons if possible, DS hates them. He refused to eat any puree that had alot of citric acid in it.

  • He really won't taste the lemon because you need very little.  Otherwise, he'll have to eat brown apples or just skip apples and stick with non browning fruit :)

  • Use fruit that won't go brown . Do they have a fridge you can use??

Strawberries will keep, cut up grapes, nectarines. If you pack a banana, will they not take the 3 seconds to cut it up in spears?
  • Orange juice also works on apples if he would like that better. Really any citrus juice.
  • I think vinegar works too.

  • I never thought about trying orange juice, duh! I'm going to try a few variations and see how it works, I'd like to try out the vinegar too.

  • For apples, I've found they brown much less if I nuke them for a bit.  I started doing that when the apples were a bit too hard for LO to manage on his own, and found they didn't brown so much when I stored some in the fridge.  So you could try that for apples at least.

  • well for apples I usually steam them w/some cinnamon & a little bit of vanilla extract. It gives it favor & its softer for finger foods. I cut them up & they are great to take around. I give these apples w/her yogurt & its a big hit!!!
