I'm new and have questions about the bio?

I'm new to this website and still trying to get the hang of it.. I saw that you can edit your "bio", pick a theme and create a profile kind of but every time I click on someones name their bio doesn't show? Is the bio only for you? Lol I'm confused and feel like a noob. Help please!
