3 week baby not napping all day

My sister's 3 week old son is wide awake all day until 1 or 2 am. She is nursing on demand and he has normal wet and poppy diapers. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • He cries whenever she puts him down for a nap.

  • To me it sounds like the 3 week growth spurt. They eat at the boob around the clock and don't sleep. This happened with my DS and it last 2 days. I'm dreading the 6week one

  • I agree w PPs: your nephew may be overly tired during the day and thus not sleeping. Also, if he's not getting full feedings he may be hungry more frequently and not able to sleep bc of this.
You mentioned that your sister demand feeds your nephew....would she be open to parent led feeding? I'm a STM. We've done parent led feeding w both of our daughters. We are not slaves to the clock (feeding every three hours no matter what etc.). However knowing when our baby will likely need to feed helps me and DH plan our days and modify her feeding schedule accordingly. Also, DD1 has always been a good nighttime sleeper. I attribute the schedule/routine parent led feeding provides to this. DD#2 is only 4 weeks old but is getting her days and nights figured out.
I know parent led feeding is not for everyone, but it works for us.
    Good luck to your sister!

  • I'm a FTM due in July and have been reading What to Expect in the First Year.  It says that either parent led or on demand feedings can work, it just depends on the child and the family.  So it's worth a try.

  • WHY do you HAVE to wait 3 hours?  Why in the world wouldn't you just feed him 15 minutes earlier?

ETA: If you wanted convenience and predictability, you probably shouldn't have had a baby. Those aren't their best qualities.

    This!!

Scheduled feedings, or "parent led feeding"?! Wtf. If the baby is hungry or wanting to nurse, FEED THE BABY. OMG. I can't believe that this happens.

  • My first born was a lot like this. She'd be up and ready to party all day.

I finally just started "quiet time" after a feeding. She'd either just lay alone for a bit and eventually fall asleep or just hang out.

I also put her to bed when we went to bed. Went through a routine and laid her down. It took a few days but she caught on in no time.

It was weird she didn't sleep at all a good share of the day but she was a great nighttime sleeper, so win some/lose some.

1am is waaayyy to late though without at least a nap, so I say over-tiredness is kicking in.
