Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Do you have any good stories from your labor?

We want to hear about the surprisingly good stuff that happened during your labor. Did you end up being besties with your nurse? Did you see firsthand how much your partner loves you? Maybe you appreciated the fact that you were in charge? Or that all your body issues disappeared? What surprisingly good things happened while you were in labor?

Re: Do you have any good stories from your labor?

  • I had spent weeks 30-36 of my pregnancy in a bit of a tizz...my baby was breech and so I was doing all I could to turn baby, inversions at home, setting a chiropractor, about to visit someone to turn baby...then suddenly at 36 weeks, while my husband was at a conference 4 hours away, my water broke and I went into labor. My hopes of a natural, med free delivery went out the window, and I went from being the most highly strung person to the most calm person ever! I think I realized I had no power to change anything and so I went into this Zen, happy place. Two of the nurses commented that I was the happiest, most relaxed patient they had had! When my husband showed up (he made it before my cs thankfully!) he was shocked at my calm demeanor too!!
  • I had a surprisingly difficult labor that ended with my doctor telling me he was going to try to turn my daughter around (after 2 hours of pushing with no progress) but that it probably wouldn't work.
It worked and 5 pushes later my baby girl was out! Every nurse came into my room to watch because it was such a rare occurrence considering my daughter was still so far back in. I would have had a c-section if it wasn't for him.

  • I had to be induced at 41 weeks due to a blood pressure of 180/100 and periods of confusion. I was terrified, and I wanted a natural birth. Due to trouble keeping LOs monitor set, I could only lay in one position on my back. I made it through 7 hours and to 5cm before asking for the epidural.... And even then I only asked for it so I could progress faster. After being complete and ready to push, the baby's head was stuck. Vacuum suction helped him out- when we found out he was over 10lb! He couldn't wear the newborn diapers or clothes or hat they give you, so we had to improvise with what they had in the nursery. To this day, he's off the charts in weight and height.... My giant wanted to keep baking but this cook closed the kitchen!!
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • My toddler was in the delivery room with us. She didn't quite understand everything that was happening so when I reacted to contractions, she would howl with me. She also kept tickling my feet hanging off the edge of the bed. She was definitely the comic relief.
  • My first labor was 27 hours long and then 3 additional hours of pushing on top of that. I was sure that my second would be the same, so I took my time getting to the hospital. However, by the time I had packed my bag, dropped my toddler off at her grandparents, and checking into L&D my contractions were only 1.5 minutes apart. I jumped in the jacuzzi and within 2 hours I was holding my daughter in my arms. It was a much better experience the second time around. The birth was quick and I finally got the natural birth I'd be hoping for!

  • My first labor was surprisingly short. Total labor was only 7 hours and I pushed her out within 24 mins.
  • I was induced at 40 weeks & 4 days and at some point I couldn't handle the pain anymore and asked for the laughing gas. I've never had it before, so while I inhaled the gas (which btw didn't help at all) I must have sounded like Darth Vader because all I could hear from my mother and husband, who were both front row atendees, was 'I'm your father Luke'. It sure gave me something to smile about ;)
  • I planned on doing a water birth in the hospital and laboring at home as long as possible, until contractions were 4 minutes apart. My contractions never became consistent, jumping from 20 to 7 to 13 minutes apart, etc. Then they stopped having any time in between and I realized the baby was coming! I started to panic but my partner did a great job keeping me calm. I had sent my mom back to her hotel (with my car) 10 minutes away and by the time she got to the house I was already crowning. 3 pushes later and I had a beautiful baby girl. My partner was still on the phone with the emts when it happened!
  • I was induced at 42 weeks and 3 days. I wasn't really progressing until 20 hours after the process started. I asked for an epidural and before I knew it, it was time to push. After 29 hours old labor, I was pushing and it only took 30 mins of pushing before my baby girl was in my arms!
  • My water broke at 39 weeks at 11 pm at night, but no contractions.  I ended up getting induced at about 2am.  Contractions started at 7am and epidural went in at 8:15am.  Epidural wore off at 11:45am (after bolusing twice).  Pushed from about noon and my sweet baby boy was welcomed into this world at 12:45pm.  All in all, just under 14 hours from water breaking to baby born!

  • I was induced at 39 weeks b/c I'm a T1 diabetic.  I prepared myself mentally (as best i could for a first time birth!) to be in labor for hours and possibly have to get a C section.  The dr broke my water at 8am, by 2pm I was 2 centimeters dilated, the dr told me to turn over on my side around 2:30pm, and within 15 minutes I went from 2 to 10 centimeters!  My daughter was delivered vaginally at 3:28pm!  I was too far along for an epidural, and while it was blinding, numbing, pain, I was blessed to have it go so quickly.  I was sore for maybe a day or 2 after, but by the time we came home from the hospital i felt great and was so proud of my body for being able to bring this little miracle into the world.
  • The entire time I was pushing and when the doctor came in...South Park was playing on the TV. And since it was at night nothing was censored and the commercials were for phone sex haha...the staff and my husband and I would all randomly break out in giggles

  • I had an amazing all natural labor & delivery with my second baby, and our 6 year old son was in the room!! I was 40 weeks & 2 days and it was about 7:30am,after taking our 6 year old son to school sitting on the couch leaning back I felt so much pressure, so I sat up and it made the pressure much worse, so I stood and my water broke! I was pretty shocked and laughing, and stood there for a minute before I told my husband, he was still in bed. So I went to the bathroom to check things out and wasn't sure if I pee'd or my water broke, there were no contractions. I was pretty sure my water broke so I called my mom to tell her to head this way soon, called the doctor's office since I had an appt in like 30 minutes anyway, they said I can come to my appt and get checked or go to the hospital. I didn't really want to be in the hospital just yet since no contractions started so we went to the office. The midwife said my water halfway broke and that we should make our way to the hospital. We got to the hospital, my mom got there soon after, and I had to be monitored for a few minutes so they could see where I was at. At that point my husband decided to get our son out of school because we wouldn't be able to any other time. They got back to the hospital (yes, our son was in the room for the labor & delivery!), the nurse broke my water the rest of the water and contractions started really coming full force soon after! My mom and I went walking down the hall, but I couldn't even make it to the end, the contractions were too intense! We made our way back to the room and the nurse brought me a ball to use, but most of the time I was bending over the bed with my head down and rocking back and forth. Contractions were one after the other and I finally said I need the epidural. (I've read that when you get to that point you're pretty much ready to deliver). Within the couple minutes it took for my husband to get the nurse, my body started pushing on its own while I was leaning over the bed. I was ready to have the baby standing up! My husband and nurse got me in the bed, the nurse checked me and I was between 9 & 10 cm and within 15 minutes our baby boy was here! They didn't even have time to get a saline IV going or anything! He was born at 2:55pm. It was an amazing experience!!
  • My water broke at 12:45 am. DH had just gotten home from work. I called my SIL who lives across the street to come sit with DS. No contractions yet but after the 20 minute ride to the hospital they were beginning. I was checked out but the contractions went so fast I wasn't even admitted before they had me in a wheel chair headed to a room. Still not fully admitted and an epidural was on it's way. I thought I could do without but I couldn't focus on anything and by the time that began to work I was at 7 or 8. My mom and SIL arrived at about 3:30 much better and calm. Oh the anesthesiologist couldn't get it in the first time so it took extra time. I pushed for an hour made an intern head to the er because she almost passed out as DD was being born. She was born at 7:18am. Recovery was worse- long story short- spinal headache, very sore and swollen lady parts and I needed 7 rhogam shots becaus of my O- blood type. After 4 days in the hospital and missing thanksgiving (but DH brought me a plate) we went home. Not to mention DD lost 11% of her birth weight so the lactation consultants were in the room constantly! I'm just glad to have my happy and chubby baby girl here!!

  • We went to the hospital around 2am.  I got one epidural and it didn't take so I finally got a second one around 6am and my husband slept through it!  He woke up a while later and said "did they ever come back?"  haha!

  • I was in labor on New Years Eve.  It was awful!  I kept calling my boyfriend to come to the hospital, but he went out to the bars and never texted me back.  Luckily my girl Luz got to me, although she wanted to go out too.  She snuck some Bircardi O and pineapple juice into the hospital in a water glass, so she had a good time.  Then her and my grandma got in a huge screaming match, then started shoving, so they got kicked out of the hospital, and I was stuck by myself.  I was tweeting my friends for a little while on my phone, but I dropped my phone during a contraction, and it cracked.  It was the worst thing ever!!!1  My boyfriend Brody didn't come the next day after I snapchatted him pictures of the baby.  But his brother came, and we totally made out in the hospital bed while the baby was sleeping.  I soaked the front of my shirt!
  • I was induced with my first so didn't know what to expect as far as labor with my second. I went to the Dr. Christmas Eve for my weekly at 38 weeks and he said I was still 2cm. I went shopping after and started getting little pains in my pelvis but thought I was gassy or cramping from the exam. I went home and napped then woke up to pick up my preschooler at DC. I was still having little pains. Around 6pm I called my mom to talk about holiday plans and while I was talking, the pains got more frequent and we started timing them and they were becoming regular 13min, then 7 min. She said she would head over (lives an hour away). I figured I had some time. My husband got in the shower and I started packing. When I stood up I though Inhad peed on myself but wasn't sure if maybe my water broke. Sure enough, I had bloody show. The pain got intense and came really fast. I yelled for DH to get out if the shower and go NOW! We ended up leaving our hospital bag behind and barely got in the car but I couldn't buckle LO the pain we so bad and baby started crowning in the car. My LO became my coach and said Dont worry momma. Luckily we live 10 min. from the hospital cause we pulled up to the ER grabbed a wheel chair and rolled me in. Then the ER guys wanted to check me I kicked off my pants and said he's coming NOW. They agreed and rolled me to delivery. I did not want a natural birth but I did it. 10 minutes after entering the ER and one push. He was out. The Dr on call nor my husband were present at delivery. The nurse just caught him and cut the cord. So crazy! That is a Christmas I will never forget. I hadn't finished wrapping stuff so my parents found everything and gave presents to my LO and then everyone came over to see the big gift at the hospital!

  • I have boy/girl twins and went to the doc to have my NST at 35 wrks and 6 days and doc said I was in labor and I didn't feel a thing. It was awesome! DH and I walked over to the hospital and our twins were born!!! 12-11-13
  • Quick delivery, surprised as it was my first. I was induced at 39 weeks (social induction so my best friend and fellow L&D nurse, and my OB could care for me). I wouldn't have done an induction but I was already 3-4 cm. Started Pitocin at 6:15p, water broken at 7:20, fully dilated at 11:40, Josh born at 11:45pm. Great experience!!

  • Pregnant with boy/girl twins. Woke up to use the bathroom at 11pm and was having contractions on the toilet (34w5d). Water broke while I was sitting there. Headed to the hospital by 12:30 and got there in record timing due to my hubby's fast driving, thank goodness no one was on the road and no cops.
Was already dilated to 6 so was able to get the epidural and relax until about 3am until it was time to push. Pushed for 3 hours until my son was born, Dominic Jayden. Then 33 min later my daughter was born, Ciara Aliyah. She was stubborn and didn't want to come out. Doc almost had to use forceps, but I was able to push enough for her to make her way out naturally also.
Overall I great first delivery. Didn't know I had it in me until it came time to meet my babies.

  • I know many first time moms say this but for me it was true, I almost died.

My labor pains started Friday morning March 21, 2014. I had pain all through the day but the contractions did not get any closure so the doctors did not want me to come in yet, but wanted updates as I had preeclampsia. My back was killing me and the only thing that would relieve the pain was taking a hot shower and letting the water hit my back, so I took a lot of showers that day.

About 8:00 pm I began to vomit and my Doctor wanted me to come to the hospital at this point. At 10: 00 AM on Saturday March 22nd they broke my water to help speed things up. At 2:00 pm my platelet count had begun to drop a significant amount and I began to bleed from everywhere. They placed a urinary cath. and I had four IV caths. the bag attached to me urinary cath. contained all blood my husband later told me, he also said that every time they checked to see how dilated I was it was as if someone poured a pitcher of blood out of me. My parents and husband did not tell me this until much later for fear it would scary me. I was also bleeding from my nose, very heavily and started to go in and out of consciousness. I ended up having to receive blood.

They called in a specialist and at 6:45 pm took me into to do an emergency C-Section, they would not allow my husband in the OR as the completely knocked me out and intubated me. There was a total for 4 doctors and 8 nurses in the operating room. The doctors had me sign a waiver saying that if it came down to it to save my baby instead of me. My family was then told that I may not make it through the surgery and to pray.

By the grace of God I made it through, I spent a week in the hospital and was told I could not have any more children. God allowed me to live and raise a beautiful happy healthy baby boy.
