IVF Ladies 35+: How many eggs at retrieval?

Hello ladies! So after i've read several forums I thought the norm was to have 20+ eggs at retrieval. So when I had my second ultrasound today they could see 5 follicles of "notable" size (14mm) with other smaller ones. My nurse thought everything was going great, so when I asked her why did I not have 25+ eggs, she laughed and said unless I was a 22 year old, she hasn't heard of anyone having this much eggs. I'm only on my 7th day of stims with another 5 to go until ER this coming tuesday. I cant help but wonder if you are 35 years old or above, how many eggs did they retrieve? Thanks a bunch and good luck to you all!!

Re: IVF Ladies 35+: How many eggs at retrieval?

  • I'm 31 and had 19 eggs retreived.  My AFC was only about 15 at my baseline so we did retrieve a few more than were shown on the baseline but only 14 retreived were actually mature.

This is a copy paste from my signature. I was 33-34 for my other cycles and 35 only for my IVF #5, but it yielded the most eggs. Finding the right protocol is key.  20+ is definitely not very realistic for someone our age, unless there is PCOS or something, but then you have quality issues. I think most RE's are happy with 4 or more. It sounds like you are right on track and I wish you the best!

  • I had seven, because my cycle was poorly managed. :( 20+ is a lot for anyone. I will say that all seven of mine were mature and fertilized, which does speak to quality v quantity.

Mine is in my sig and I may need to edit this but if memory serves from a few months ago we had 13 retrieved, 11 mature, and 7 fertilize.  I have "great" looking AMH #s for "someone my age" and a decent AFC at baseline (like around 19 or 20?) so I look good on paper for being AMA.

  • This is something that varies so much based on DX, AMH, FSH, antral follicle count and stimulation protocol.  So, I don't think comparing based on eggs is the best.  Besides that many REs do not want to have more than 15 or so follicles mature due to risks related OHSS and there are some that think they retrieve better quality eggs if there are less than 20 anyway.

I was 31 for my first and second IVF cycles.  We had 4 eggs retrieved/mature for IVF #1 with 3 fertilize and 3 beautiful expanded blasts.  On IVF #2, I had 6 retrieved, 4 mature and 3 fertilize.  Only 2 made it to blasts and only one of those was considered great quality wise.  IVF #3 (I was 32), I had 7-8 retrieved, 4 mature and 2 fertilize.  We transferred both on day 2 and it was the cycle that finally worked for us.  I will be doing a mini-IVF cycle in February at the age of 35 (almost 36).

  • I am 36 and had 15 eggs retrieved with 14 fertilized, but only 3 made it to day 5 (there was a very large drop off between day 3 and 5)

At my 2nd ultrasound I had 5 follicles between 10 and 12mm.  They did up my dosage of Menopur after that but I was also a slow grower (if that makes sense)

I would agree it depends on your protocol and circumstances (my AMH is good for someone my age and we are unknown in terms of diagnosis).  I definitely was nervous about not getting any / enough eggs but in the last few days really is when they started to grow.

From what I heard as well - you really don't want 20+ as you then are at risk for OHSS.  At our WTF appointment my RE said she would not stimulate me any further than she did last round as she wants to prevent OHSS.

    Good luck!!

  • **PAIF response***

    I'm DOR but
    1st cycle: cancelled (age 35)
2nd cycle:4 retrieved (all M1 but matured in vitro), 2 made it to 2 day transfer
3rd cycle (New RE), 8R,8M, 8F, 2 made it to 5 day transfer (age 36)
4th cycle: 8R/8M/8F,  transferred 2 at 5 days, froze 2, now pregnant with singleton.

Everybody is different and the protocol can make a huge difference. I think you are right where you need to be!

  • ***PAIF***

I'm 35. The average number collected was around 10 each time.  Most came from the right ovary with all three cycles.  My left is a dud.

Don't panic, it's egg quality that matters not quantity.

  • I am 39 and both ivf cycles started out with about 8ish follicles mostly on one side.  The other side does not produce well.  Quality is more important than number, I think.  Good luck.
