looking for diaper rash prevention and tips...

I am a FTM. My DS has a small area on his bottom that has a  little rash. I was just wondering what other mothers do to prevent a diaper rash or if I could get any tips with dealing with a rash.
I am now using Sudocrem diaper rash cream on the effected area. Should I be putting the cream on his bottom after every diaper change even when there is no sign of a rash? I do use Johnsons baby powder with every diaper change. Should I be using the diaper rash cream and baby powder together?
Any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated :-)

Re: looking for diaper rash prevention and tips...

  • We use Triple paste. We've never used baby powder.

Try to leave the diaper off for a few minutes every few hours or so, just put DS in a towel for a bit so his bottom has time to air out. Change diapers frequently, try to not let him sit if he's wet/dirty.Try to avoid wipes/diapers with a fragrance. When our LO's got bad, I used a squirt bottle of water to clean her and then towel/paper towel to pat dry instead of wiping her because that seemed to irritate her.

  • Baby powder is no longer recommended and often considered unsafe.

We use A&D. At every diaper change, we would use Huggies natural wipes, then dry the whole area qith a dry washcloth, then apply a&d liberally.

    This.

And we use a zinc oxide cream on DD's butt.  The hospital gave us a tube when we were discharged and we were told to use it for every diaper change.  After the first 2 weeks, we started using it before bed time only.  She started to get a tiny bit of redness so we started using it again at every diaper change and it cleared right up.

  • Thanks for your input ladies! :-)
  • we use "butt paste" with every diaper change. Her bottom is still a little red, she seems to have sensitive skin. The pedi recommended using just water and cotton balls, that seemed very messy so I went google crazy and found a recipe to make our own wipes (coconut oil, baby shampoo, water and bounty paper towels). Frequent diaper changes and if possible some naked time should help too.

Mix half desitin (or any diaper cream) and half Vaseline in a container and use that. Trust me!

    Also use pampers sensitive wipes.

  • We use Balmex with every diaper change, his rash cleared up fast and hasn't returned.

  • Arbonne diaper cream is excellent. Pretty much anything with zinc oxcide but I'd get a natural product, or as close to it as you can so you don't have to worry about any other "junk" on your babies bottom. Diaper free time.

    Cloth diapers!!

No rashes with cloth diapers. Ever. Even though I use the occasional disposable now too.

  • Our LO has a sensitive bum. We actually changed diapers. We had been using pampers but they have chlorine and latex in them. We moved to a more natural diaper....Whole Foods store brand (priced cheaper than pampers). We also use Vaseline on the diaper and zinc oxide on her bottom. Her rash is nonexistent now :).
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.

We're just now getting over a particularly stubborn bout of it!  What worked for us was applying butt paste (zinc oxide, mostly) along her crack and near it, and then slathering everything with petroleum jelly (Vaseline).  I also pat her bottom dry with a soft cloth after using a wipe to clean her.  I do this for every change.

ETA: She's in cloth, but it doesn't seem to matter terribly; a few times we ran out of prefolds and had her in disposables, and nothing obviously changed.

  • We put in coconut oil on his bottom after every diaper change, I leave the diaper off for a couple of minutes most times. If he gets a rash I use a & d if he's in sposies or cjs butter if he's in cloth. Works great. I use cloth mostly so I change him more frequently.

I found that her wipes were causing the rash. I began using pampers sensitive wipes and it went away and has never retutned.
  • We use Butt Paste if there is a rash and Burt's Bees All-Purpose Ointment for prevention every other diaper change or so. He pees and poops a TON, so we have lots of diaper changes.
  • It seems everyone does something different...

What works for us is changing diapers frequently. We make sure to keep baby's bottom very clean. We don't put anything on LO unless there's sign on irritation. We've only had one bout of diaper rash and BUTT paste cleared it up in about five diaper changes.

Just my observation, but it seems to me like the best way to avoid diaper rash is prevention by keeping baby in clean diapers. Change change change that diaper. I mean you wouldn't want to sit in pee or poop any longer than you absolutely had to either right?
  • I only use a zinc oxide cream when there's redness and occasionally before bed, but only if we're having a stubborn bout of it. I use fragrance free wipes and change after every nap and when otherwise needed. Other than when we were switching formulas to find one that worked with his system, he hasn't had any persistent diaper rash.

Our little one had a REALLY bad diaper rash, and believe it or not, a cornstarch paste did wonders! Yes cornstarch! Try it!
First the doctor had us put so much stuff on her bottom and it only got worse, so much worse. Cornstarch! I swear by it!
Forget about desitin or any diaper cream. We even tried a prescription cream, none of it worked.
  • My mother actually suggested I use cornstarch guess she use to use it on my sisters and mine bottoms. I actually stoped using cream just to see if it would make a difference because the rash didn't seem like it was getting any better. I also stopped using wipes on him after every wet diaper. I now only use a dry cloth to take the dampness away and use wipes every second or third wet diaper and of course if he poops. Any way he is now rash free :-)
  • We've only had one diaper rash so far but it blistered poor dd's butt. She had really bad diarrhea one day and it just ate her up. We tried a couple of different creams and nothing worked. So I got some bag balm and it cleared her butt up within a day. I won't use anything else now.
  • We do Aquaphor at every diaper change (or every other at least). It is a skin protectant and helps poop wipe right off.

I also use Aveeno's zinc oxide cream if there's any redness.

I have used Qtips or cotton balls to dry out his crevices, but pp's are right- powder is frowned on these days. My pedi said no powder.

  • We slathered in vaseline after every change- she didn't have her firet diaper rash until almost 1.5. We used zinc oxide cream and coconut oil.
  • Cornstarch is the BEST! It's only $1 for a box and I got a cinnamon shaker and voila! I don't waste money on the creams, promise you'll never waste money on them either
  • Aquaphor all the way. After every diaper change. It worked miracles in a matter of 2-3 days.
  • Monkey butt is what we use, and only at the sight of a little redness. Never really had a bad rash yet. She is also only in cloth, but I don't know if that plays a big role or not(some say it does).
  • I found all the wipes known to man kind gave my LO a really bad rash, like blister rash. So we just use washcloths then dry with a dry one. I use sudocream at night time and if irritated. And desitin if there's a bad rash.
  • I put Desitin at every diaper change! So far so good.
  • Aquaphor !

This! I don't use it for every diaper change but if I see any redness, I apply it. By the next day, the redness is usually gone. DS never had a diaper rash and I think that's why. It's seriously a wonder ointment. Buy it.

  • I'd tell you not to use baby wipes every-single-time, wash its bootty once in a while with water instead and I'd recommend you to buy DESITIN for diaper rash prevention.

  • I use A&D with every diaper change for my daughter! After we brought her home the hospital she had plenty of bowel movements and I was nervous about diaper rash, everyone suggested A&D! More natural way to prevent! good luck!
  • Breast milk works wonders if you're breast feeding, just soak a paper towel and dab it on!!  Best thing is it's free and readily available!

  • when we first got brought our LO home from the hospital she had a rash pretty much all the time...butt paste would clear it up but it always came back.  My sister told me not to use the wipes on her when she pees ..only when she poops.  And to use fragrance free ones then.  Since then I haven't seen any redness at all on her.  Every now and then I put butt paste on if I feel like I used a lot wipes on her poop change.  good luck
