Moving and property tax ?

Hey ladies,
We may be relocating to the Matteson/Plainsfield area, but I am totally overwhelmed by the amount of property tax on the homes. Is it really possible that a $250k home has $12,000 yearly taxes? I'd just love some feedback on how much you guys pay or am I just doomed to live in a tent?

I'm in the Oswego school district and ours are about $9,000 for a $250,000ish house. In IL, the state pays very little for schools. Most of the money comes from property taxes. The area you are looking in has been building so they need money to build more schools.

Yep that sounds about right to me.  I live in the SW Suburbs (Cook County) and my taxes are about half that, but my home is only 1200 sq ft.

I have a co worker moving to Aurora (Fox Valley, W Burbs, DuPage County) and her house is about 3500 sq ft and about $350K and her taxes are in that $11k range.

Yeah, that sounds about right for Plainfield. IL property tax is just rough :( It will very subdivision to subdivision though. Because our subdivision is from the 90's we pay under 10k and they newer homes we looked at were around 12k.

I live in Yorkville Illinois which is close to Plainfield. We pay 12k a year. When we relocated to Illinois 3 years ago the property taxes shocked us as well! I have seen homes in my area around 400k and the property taxes are 21k a year. INSANE!!

We pay around 13k and a large majority of that goes to the schools. We did appeal and they were lowered around 1k (from 14 to 13k). When we were looking to buy, property taxes were a lot lower in the city for the same dollar value of house.

Ugh, bumping on a tablet. Please disregard the last message but that seems about right... I leave near there and pay similar taxes.

I am in the Fox Valley and pay $7,000 for a $250,000 town house (I don't even own my land!).  Ridiculous but the Geneva school system is fantastic!
