gender ultrasound wrong?

Has anyone ever had a gender ultrasound, they tell you what the sex is, but have a sinking feeling they are wrong? We had ours done monday, the tech said baby had its legs closed tight and couldn't find it. Suddenly he said it was a boy and stopped the u/s. He rushed us out pretty quickly too. My husband and i both left feeling like we dont want to trust it 100%. We want a secosecond opinion. I will try and post a picture. Look at it good, and tell me what you think. When he moved the thing just a hair, the "penis" looked longer and like the cord or an arm.

Re: gender ultrasound wrong?

  • I will have to post it from my computer
  • Uh yeah. Sounds sketchy to me I'm assuming this is an elective ultrasound you're talking about?
Best to get it confirmed during the anatomy scan. Techs are not rushed during those because it's a medical procedure to get vital info on your baby (and your placenta, the cord, ovaries, etc).. They last usually about an hour, so it's pleanty of time for them to take a peek a time or two to let you know.

  • This was the anatomy scan actually. :( He did everything he needed and "found" the gender in 30 minutes. With my first son, it was almost an hour and there was no doubt it was a boy. we are really disappointed.
Here is the picture. If you just glance, yes I can see how one would say, yea thats a boy. But if you study it, it is not a penis.
  • I would be pretty frustrated if this happened to me. Is it possible that you could express your concerns with your OB at your next appointment and they could do an ultrasound to confirm? I've managed to get a few free ultrasounds from my OB when she wanted to check things, so maybe they wouldn't even charge you for it?
  • Hmmm, that picture is questionable... I'd want a recheck as well!

I'm actually wondering the same thing, we were told boy at 15 weeks... But that's a little early, then we got an mri and a few if those pics look like a girl, so now I'm doubting it. We go for our 20 wk apt in 2 weeks, I'm excited to see him again to be sure he is a he!

I would give your OB a call tomorrow! And explain what happened and how it made you feel. Don't wait til your next apt or it will drive you crazy!

  • Sorry, I deleted the picture to edit my personal info off of it. lol Stupid me.
  • It looks like a boy bump... But it also has the three lines, which means girl... I would def get a recheck!

  • That's not the same shape I saw on our 2 year old son's pictures. His was narrower, but I'm not a tech!

Unfortunately, since it's the A/S (a medical ultrasound) they don't really have an obligation to find the sex of the baby for you. The purpose is just to determine if the baby is healthy or not, but I understand the disappointment. That picture isn't very clear to me either, but I'm not a tech. To me what the arrow is pointing to looks almost like girl parts, but they're too far out to be girl parts which is incredibly confusing. It doesn't really look like any boy parts that I've seen on potty shots before, but again I'm not a tech.

Is there any way you and DH could go to an elective ultrasound place? That way they have more of an obligation to you (as a paying customer) to determine the sex and get some nice ultrasound pictures.

  • Looking at the picture it looks like a boy to me. I have a 3D u/s pic of my little one and you can clearly see the three lines (she is a girl). In your pic the lines look different and there is a bulge protruding outward like a penis. I am not a doc or u/s tech, so this is just from my observation/opinion. I would definitely get a second opinion from a professional.
  • Here is a pic of my daughter's gender reveal elective u/s. The tech said she is 99.9% sure it's a girl. I hope this helps. :)
  • Here are a couple U/S pics from my pregnancy w/DS. It's pretty obvious that he's a boy. The 1st is from my elective gender scan @ 16 wks, the 2nd is from my anatomy scan @ 20 weeks. I hope that helps. :)

  • Idk that looks pretty solid boy to me. It's not the typical angle, but is see it!

  • Hmm looks like scrotum, or large girl parts. I wouldn't bank on it though.

  • Its not a penis. As he was doing it, he moved the angle and the thing that looks like the penis was longer. Looked just like the umbilical cord when he was showing it to us. Then he moved it back and the longer part disappeared, and he said boy and stopped. Thanlfully, I called my dr today and she is more than happy to do a gender confirmation ultrasound at my next appt. So that makes me very relieved. Even if its for sure a boy, I Just don't feel comfortable going off the first one.
  • It's definitely questionable. Glad your doctor will do another one. I have attached mine and you can definitely tell its a boy!
