WARNING: THIS THREAD MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - READ AT YOUR OWN RISK! :D

Hi Ladies! It's time to discuss the October Book Club selections. There are separate threads for each book so if someone only read one, they won't get spoilers for the other.

Let's have fun discussing Divergent!

November Book Club:
The November book discussions will be on Monday, November 25th at 8PM EST. You can read just one or both. :)

  • What Alice Forgot - Liane Moriarty
  • Expecting Better - Emily Oster

I'd also like to propose a discussion date for Insurgent and Allegiant (the whole series really) this month. I know that a lot of ladies have already read the second book and are finishing up the series. So, we can probably have the discussion in November. Hopefully you can join in! Please let me know if you would like to be tagged in the discussion thread so you'll get a notification.

  • The Insurgent & Allegiant discussion will be posted on Monday, November 18th at 8PM EST.

  • I loved Divergent.  I was not immediately captivated by the characters, but it really didn't take long.  I read this book in record time (since having my son).  I also have finished Insurgent and Allegiant so at this point I am having difficulty seperating the 3 in my memory.  I really liked how action packed it was.  Sorry I am don't have much constructive to say yet, but I think reading other peoples comment will jog my memory.

  • @kkranberry - I knew I would get them jumbled up too, so I was trying to wait to read the second book until after the discussion. I ended up starting it a couple of days ago though. This morning I was trying to think of things to say in the discussion, and I had to keep catching myself saying, "No. That's in the second book!"

I liked Divergent too. I think it takes a while to feel any connection to the characters because of the nature of the made up world/situation. It takes a lot of explanation and that can take away from the author's ability to develop the characters much at the beginning.

I also liked that it was action packed. It really helps move the story along, especially with a new world you have to learn about. I thought how the population was separated into different factions that have their own place in society was interesting. I kept trying to think about whether or not there was something they were forgetting that hadn't be covered with the factions' strengths. I was also trying to decide which faction I would choose, and I think it would have been Abnegation. It seems like the easiest to live in without worry of becoming factionless. :p

I was a little annoyed that the book ended in what I felt was still the middle of the fight. Now that I've started the second one, I can see why the author did it that way.

  • Also, for the people that are worried about including book 2 or 3 spoilers in their responses, the first book ends after Tris is able to shut down the simulation. Tris's mother and father both die. Tris, Four, Peter, Marcus, and Caleb catch a train to the Amity sector.

@huskymomma94 - I decided to have one discussion that can cover both Insurgent and Allegiant. I think that people who have read all the books are going to have a hard time separating them from each other for two discussions. So, we'll have one discussion on Monday, November 18th at 8PM EST.

I'll make sure to tag you. :)

  • I would like to be tagged on these discussions. I think I would be in abnegation. I loved how tris literally jumped in to the dauntless faction.

  • I like to think that I would join dauntless, but in reality I probably would have chosen amity. I also just want to comment on how impressed I am with Veronica Roth. She is so young and talented. I can't imagine how you even begin to write a trilogy especially with such an intricate storyline.

  • Please tag me in those too.

I really loved Divergent. I'm a closet YA reader. It got my attention quickly and the action never stopped.

I don't know which faction I'd choose. I do know that it definitely wouldn't be tris's original faction or the one who believes in complete truth.

We just picked new books for November (listed in my first post - you don't have to read both), so you'll be right with us for the new month. :)  Do you want me to add you to the tag list for book club?

  • I think I also would choose Erudite simply because I love to learn. Not the whole, destroying other factions and wanting to take over the world part... It didn't take me very long to get into the book. I read it in 2 days!

Yes. I feel like the people that are willing to hurt others to advance themselves in Dauntless don't deserve to be there. I view the Dauntless as strong, proud, and confident. If you need to hurt others to make yourself feel better (or do better in the rankings), you shouldn't be there.

  • It was an interesting twist when tris' mom came to family day! Up until that point I wasn't sure anyone would come and then what she revealed. It set the scene for the rest of the book.

Speaking of the movie, what do you guys think of Shailene Woodley as Tris?

I think I'd have a hard time separating her from her character on Secret Life. I really didn't like her character on the show, (whiny and bitchy), and I'm having a hard time imagining her doing any of the badass things Tris does.
Do you guys think the movie will do it justice?
Probably not. I think that most movies do a poor job translating, especially when there needs to be a lot of explanation with good "show not tell."

  • I liked it! I think I'd prob be in amity or abnegation. I really like learning too, though. Hah I'm indecisive. Can you tell? DIVERGENT lol.

I was also surprised when Al attacked Tris. I wanted to stab Peter.

I enjoyed her internal struggle to conform to one set faction. The abegnation just kept coming through no matter how she tried to suppress it.

  • I am discussing this trilogy with a friend currently and have to ask you guys this...

Does it freak anyone else out about how close to our real life this book (trilogy) gets? I mean, think about the factions... We kinda have factions in real life. Ex- dauntless=military. Just one example.

I do not think a movie would do the books justice either. They just can't get enough detail in to that short amount of time.

I don't feel like movies ever do these types of books justice - Hunger Games, Twilight, e.g. I didn't like either movie(s) but enjoyed the books.

  • A little late jumping in and I am thinking hard about only talking about the first book (like many others, it seems).

I loved how Tris made the shift and was pretty surprised that her brother picked Erudite. I can't imagine how it would feel to lose family like that on choosing day.

One thing I struggle with in most YA books (even though I love them) is one-sided characters. With this set-up of factions, the characters are that way by design which was interesting. I still was a little irritated with it but it made Tris' struggle stand out more.

I agree with you madapple.  I am having a very difficult time separating Shailene Woodly from her character on Secret Life. In some aspects I think she will do ok, but in others(namely situations in Insurgent) I do not think she will be up to par.  I loved how Four "adopted" Tris right from the start and helped mold her into who she really was.

I was a little irritated with how Tris was so willing to throw herself into every bad situation, but at the end I know I would have done the same thing if I were in her shoes.  I am sad she had to lose both parents but it only strengthened her resolve to get to the bottom of what was going on.  I also believe if I were to choose I would be Divergent as well.  I would have chosen between Candor and Dauntless.  I am looking forward to finishing this trilogy and not crying like a baby when Tris looses yet another one of her loved ones!

Sorry I'm late for the party - I was finishing up the book last night and then promptly passed out and had more messed up Divergent dreams. I agree with PPs that the book started slow... I remember texting a friend who had strongly recommended the series telling her how much more I enjoyed The Hunger Games and she was like, "Yeah... keep reading." It definitely picked up about half way through and I was so glad I finished.

One thing I thought was interesting and that I lost sight of was that it was a YA book with YA themes (like @knittinlins said). I also feel like the faction one would be in at 16 would be so dramatically different than their personality even just a few years later unless we're really truly completely shutting down free will. Like I think me at 16 would likely be Erudite, but now I would much more identify with Candor. I think a lot of my life in experience in our NON-post-apocalyptic world have shaped me into a very different person. You can argue better/worst depending on your beliefs, but those individual experiences were extremely important.

@theluckiest9 - I 100% agree with you. I do, however, think this series may be a bit more set up for a movie (which I think they are producing now) than the others were. Or maybe I'm just being overly optimistic. The Twilight movies were so horrible, and I just feel like the Hunger Games movies just could never capture the right feel of the book.

Parts of the book were really hard for me to read - particularly when the boys attacked Tris and tried to throw her to her death. I felt quite sick from that - I don't think I'd be able to shut a simulation down.

PS - Found this: http://www.quotev.com/quiz/1792791/Which-Divergent-Faction-are-you-Suited-To/ but I find it to be horribly inaccurate for me ;)

Edited because of spacing and to add the quiz!

  • I liked the book, but in my head I kept measuring it up to Hunger Games, that definitely blew me away the first time I read it.  This was a good read, but needed something *more* perhaps I will discover that something more when I read the remainder of the trilogy.
