Update /Broken Filling

I have one.

Anybody know the scoop on anesthetic for dental work? Especially in 1st tri (I am almost 9w)

Update
I got ahold of the dentist and the long and short of it is that if I am not in pain they wont go near me till second tri. I was told to get this filler stuff at the store and use that until we finish the move and can get to my new dentist...which basically will line up with second tri.

Wish me luck shoving putty in my tooth hole :/

I am pretty sure they usually give lidocaine, which is category B. just ask them to start with the smallest dose and give more if needed.

I was told not to have dental work other than cleanings in first tri, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. This is the very reason I am avoiding the dentist right now b/c I know I need fillings - especially the one I already had that I can tell isn't right.

The same thing happened to me with my first daughter, I didn't go to the dentist and my ob was furious. I gather there is a large risk of infection or an abscess which is much more dangerous than the anesthetic. She gave me a list of approved medications and told me to get it fixed ASAP.

You probably need to call your OB and ask what medications are ok and then share that with your dentist. You don't want to risk losing a tooth or getting an infection!

I'm a dentist, although we don't like to do dental work during pregnancy we do if it is needed. As pp mentioned make sure they know you are pregnant and they will use the lowest dose of anesthesia needed. Good luck!!

I had 2 fillings break within a few weeks of each other when I was just barely in 2nd tri. One ended up needing a root canal. :( My OB said the risk of infection was MUCH greater than the risks the anesthetics may pose. I don't remember what my dentist used but I didn't feel a thing, my teeth are fixed, and I'm holding a healthy, snoring rainbow baby in my arms as I type this! :)
I would talk to your OB and see a dentist soon. Sorry about your tooth and good luck!

Thanks guys. Im going to call my ob and ask about anesthesia and then try and figure something out with MIL for DS to be watched. Id rather do the anesthesia than risk infection.

Ugh. I was told the filling was cracked at my cleaning like a week ago...i figured it would hold long enough for me to get out of first tri.

    Wonderful.

I don't know for sure but I imagine the risk for infection outweighs the risk of local lidocaine/novacaine. As usual, I would just check with your doc. Sorry about your filling, tooth pain is such a drag!

This. I just had some filled and they used lido instead of whatever they were planning to use before I told them I was KU

I had a lot of dental filling's done before I knew I was preg. & after. I happened to mention it last time to my dentist & they just changed the type of numbing shot they used.
